Open Source Hospital Information System in East Africa

very good example of the power of open source projects is this example
from East Africa. While commercially available hospital information
system (HIS) is nt only expesive, it is usually unsuitable for
hospitals in Africa, because it was created for EU/USA where - person
registration forms to not take into account addresses used in Africa,
lab tests are different, etc .... A project in East Africa is tackling
this problem by using an open source HIS - care2x
- and modifying it to suit their needs more accurately. Since the
software code is availabl for modifications, this can be done easily.
A Linux Caravan to Senegal

Some hackers in Florence and other Italian cities are busy these days
putting together Carovana X, an Italian-led initiative to help some
Senegalese communities. The members of this project are raising funds,
assembling used computers, refurbishing them with Linux, and also
collecting medical equipment and other first-necessity items. Besides
Linux, the list already includes one ambulance and 26 hospital beds.
Volunteers and equipment are welcome.
