The department of pathology at the university hospital in Basel is the origin of iPath. Telepathology has a long tradition at the Institute of Pathology of the University of Basel. The first telepathology links were established back in 1992 - frozen section over ISDN. Since 2001 the department of pathology is developing iPath and also operating a telepathology network that has meanwhile over 1000 users world wide.
