A
very good example of the power of open source projects is this example
from East Africa. While commercially available hospital information
system (HIS) is nt only expesive, it is usually unsuitable for
hospitals in Africa, because it was created for EU/USA where - person
registration forms to not take into account addresses used in Africa,
lab tests are different, etc .... A project in East Africa is tackling
this problem by using an open source HIS -
care2x
- and modifying it to suit their needs more accurately. Since the
software code is availabl for modifications, this can be done easily.
More information can be found here.
Another
interesting use of the Care2x open source HIS is at the Univeristy of
Graz, where both medical students and computer science students are
using care2x to get to know how a medical information system is built
up. A full report is available here.
Demo Version for Windows Users
For those who want to really test care2x, I created a demo version of care2x for Windows. It is based on the xampplite project and you can download the complete bundle (35MB) from here: xampplite-care2x-KB200500628.zip
